Where the description is displayed ?

In courses, coursepath and catalogs, there are long description fields with rich HTML.

But I can't see where these fields are displayed for the user...

So do these fields serve any purpose? Where are they displayed to the student?

Course description field can be used in certificates (you could you use it to fill the course abstract, for example).
I think there are no similar uses for catalogues and coursepaths descriptions.
